EVIntermediate–AdvancedReading time: 28 min
Learning Objectives
  • Explain the HV chain components (battery, distribution, contactors, fuses, HVIL).
  • State the purpose of the pre-charge circuit.
  • Summarize why isolation monitoring is critical.
  • List the basic principles of HV safety.

EV-12 — HV Electrical System

ASSUMPTION — This lesson explains the HV electrical architecture at a theoretical/engineering level. It contains no amateur intervention instructions.

1. The HV Chain

HV Battery → HV Distribution → Inverter → Motor

The HV distribution box holds contactors, the main fuse, pre-charge, HVIL, and isolation monitoring.

2. Contactors and Pre-charge

  • Contactors — relays that open/close the HV bus (normally open).
  • Pre-charge — pre-charges DC-link capacitors through a resistor to limit inrush.

FACT — For the circuit diagram and sequence see BMS Academy → BMS-06.

3. Fuse, Pyro Fuse, and HVIL

  • Main fuse — interrupts the circuit on overcurrent.
  • Pyro fuse — cuts HV very fast via a pyrotechnic trigger in a crash.
  • HVIL — detects HV connector opening and moves the system to a safe state.

4. Isolation Monitoring

Isolation monitoring continuously measures the insulation resistance between the HV bus and chassis. If an isolation (leakage) fault is detected, the system moves to a safe state.

FACT — Isolation monitoring is a critical safety layer against electric shock (detail: BMS-07).

5. HV Safety

FACT — High voltage can be lethal. Work on a real vehicle is done only by qualified personnel with appropriate PPE and OEM procedures. This education is not amateur intervention instruction.

6. FAQ

What does insulation monitoring do?

FACT — It continuously measures the insulation resistance between the HV bus and chassis; if a leakage is detected the system moves to a safe state.

What happens if an HV connector is removed?

FACT — HVIL detects the opening and opens the contactors, de-energizing the system.

7. Summary

  • The HV chain is battery → distribution → inverter.
  • Contactor + pre-charge provide safe switching.
  • Fuse/pyro fuse protect against overcurrent and crash.
  • HVIL and isolation monitoring are safety layers.

8. Sources and Verification Note

Concepts are established textbook/standard-level knowledge.

  • UNECE R100, DOE AFDC.
