Zürich Airport Begins Driverless Electric Shuttle Trials With No Safety Monitor On Board

Zürich Airport has started running a pair of fully automated electric shuttle buses across its grounds, and the vehicles are doing so without a human safety monitor seated inside. That detail sets the Swiss hub apart, since it places Zürich among the first airports in Europe to put Level 4 autonomy into service in a live, everyday environment rather than a closed test loop.

Removing the on-board attendant is a meaningful step for the technology. Most autonomous passenger shuttles still carry a trained staffer who can take over if something goes wrong, a setup that limits how much the system is genuinely being trusted to operate alone. Operating without that fallback suggests the airport and its technology partners have reached a level of confidence in the shuttle’s perception and decision-making systems.

Airport grounds present a demanding setting for self-driving software, with service roads, pedestrians, luggage carts, and aircraft support vehicles all sharing tight spaces. Running electric shuttles in that mix also fits the broader push among airports to cut emissions from the many short trips that happen on site every day.
