Rivian's R3 Will Undercut The R2, With An Even Cheaper R4 To Follow

Rivian is sketching out a wider, more affordable family of electric vehicles. CEO RJ Scaringe has indicated that the upcoming R3 will carry a price “materially lower” than the R2, the smaller SUV that is meant to broaden the brand’s reach beyond its current premium lineup.

Speaking with The New York Times, Scaringe also gave the first hint of what comes next: an R4 positioned beneath the R3, which would make it the most accessible Rivian yet. The company has not shared specific figures, timelines or specifications for any of these models, so the claims remain directional rather than detailed.

Even so, the strategy is clear. Rivian currently builds the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, both priced well into premium territory, and the R2 is the vehicle expected to move the brand into a more mainstream bracket. Stacking an R3 and then an R4 below it would extend that ladder further down the market.

Hitting those lower price points will depend on cost discipline as much as vehicle design. Cheaper cells, simpler platforms and higher production volumes are the usual tools, and Rivian has been open about its need to scale efficiently. Until the company puts numbers on the table, the R3 and R4 remain plans rather than products.
