VW ID. Polo vs. Renault 5: Identical Battery, Different Real-World Range

Two small electric hatchbacks sharing the same battery capacity can still deliver noticeably different efficiency on the road. In a European highway-focused comparison, Volkswagen’s upcoming ID. Polo and the Renault 5 were pitted against each other to see how far the identical kilowatt-hour figure actually stretches when speed climbs and charging stops matter.

The ID. Polo came out ahead on energy consumption, sipping fewer kilowatt-hours per mile than the Renault 5 over the same route. That efficiency edge also translated into shorter charging sessions, since the VW needed less time plugged in to cover the next leg of the journey.

The takeaway is a familiar one for EV shoppers: nameplate range and battery size tell only part of the story. Aerodynamics, thermal management, and software tuning shape how a car performs during real highway driving, where the gap between two similarly equipped models can become obvious.
