Volkswagen Debuts LiDAR-Equipped Electric SUV in China at Under $20,000

Volkswagen’s joint venture in China has rolled out a new battery-electric SUV, marking the brand’s first model in the country to feature LiDAR technology. The FAW-Volkswagen ID. AURA T6 enters the market with a starting price of 129,900 yuan, roughly $19,240, positioning it as an accessible option in China’s crowded EV segment.

According to the company, the SUV delivers a CLTC-rated range of up to 660 kilometers on a single charge. The inclusion of LiDAR signals Volkswagen’s push to bolster advanced driver-assistance capabilities as Chinese buyers increasingly expect sophisticated tech even at lower price points.

The launch underscores the pressure global automakers face in China, where local brands have set a rapid pace for both pricing and smart-driving features. By equipping the ID. AURA T6 with LiDAR, FAW-Volkswagen aims to compete more directly with domestic rivals that have made such sensors a hallmark of their newer models.
