Toyota Reportedly Prepares Range-Extender EV Line for China, Targeting 2028 Production

Toyota is reportedly making plans to introduce a range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) in China, according to a Japanese media report. The model would feature a compact combustion engine used solely to recharge the battery on the go, extending driving range beyond what a pure battery-electric setup could offer.

Production is said to be scheduled for as early as 2028, with an ambitious annual target of 400,000 units. That volume suggests Toyota sees significant potential for range-extender technology in the Chinese market, where charging infrastructure outside major cities can still be inconsistent.

Range-extender EVs differ from traditional plug-in hybrids: the engine never drives the wheels directly, acting instead as an onboard generator. This approach allows for a simpler electric-drive experience while addressing range anxiety for drivers who frequently travel long distances.

If the report proves accurate, Toyota would join a growing list of automakers exploring EREVs, particularly in China. The company has not officially confirmed the plans, and further details about the model’s specifications remain unclear.
