Tesla Semi Eyes Europe: More Payload, Less Range Than Rivals

Tesla’s heavy-duty electric truck, the Semi, is being prepared for European roads, where it will arrive with a clear strength and an equally clear shortfall. The American-built Class 8-style vehicle is designed to haul more cargo weight than some of its established competitors, a key selling point for fleets that measure profitability in tonnes per trip.

The trade-off comes in range. According to InsideEVs, the Semi sacrifices driving distance to achieve that payload advantage, a compromise that could limit its appeal on long-haul routes where charging stops eat into schedules. European operators often run tightly regulated duty cycles, so every kilometre of range matters.

Tesla has not announced a launch date or pricing for the European market, and it remains unclear how the Semi will be homologated for the region’s weight and length rules. For now, the truck’s arrival looks like a test of whether payload or range wins in the race to electrify freight.
