Tesla's Clean Energy Buzz Fades as Musk's Focus Shifts Elsewhere

For years, Tesla was synonymous with the push toward clean, sustainable energy. Its founder, Elon Musk, was the face of that mission, pouring time and attention into electric vehicles and renewable technology. These days, however, that picture looks very different. A recent review of coverage from even the most enthusiastic Musk-watching outlets reveals a striking absence of cleantech developments tied to his companies.
Instead of battery breakthroughs or new electric platforms, the headlines coming out of the Musk universe are dominated by SpaceX contracts, Starlink operations, and substantial political spending. Observers have noted that Musk appears increasingly aligned with fossil fuel interests, a shift that sits awkwardly with Tesla’s original stated purpose of accelerating the world’s transition away from combustion engines.
The geopolitical dimension adds further complication. Recent reporting suggests Starlink connectivity in Ukraine has been disrupted in ways that interfered with active missions, prompting accusations that SpaceX may be responding to Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski publicly questioned whether Musk was ‘playing politics’ with his products, drawing a dismissive retort from Musk himself. The episode has raised uncomfortable questions about the reliability of privately controlled communications infrastructure in conflict zones.
Meanwhile, the same Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers reportedly caused a measurable drop in bot activity across social platforms, including Musk’s own X. Users and analysts observed a sharp decline in engagement metrics on Musk’s posts in the days following the attacks, though no definitive causal link has been established. The coincidence drew attention nonetheless, given long-standing concerns about coordinated inauthentic behavior on the platform.
What stands out most for clean energy watchers is the contrast with the past. Tesla once generated a steady stream of announcements that pushed the entire industry forward. Today, there is little of that momentum coming from Musk’s orbit. The political entanglements, the military contracts, and the fossil fuel connections have largely crowded out the cleantech story. For those who believed Tesla’s mission was genuine, the silence is louder than any press release.
