Sydney Airport Begins Electric Bus Rollout With 50 Australian-Made Vehicles

Sydney Airport, the country’s busiest aviation hub, has started putting a fleet of 50 locally built electric buses into service. The rollout is split evenly: 25 of the vehicles will handle passenger shuttle duties across the terminals, while the remaining 25 are destined for airfield apron operations.

The first buses are already on the ground, marking a shift away from diesel for the airport’s day-to-day transport needs. Because both the shuttle routes and the apron work involve short, repetitive trips with frequent stops, the airport is a natural fit for battery-powered vehicles that can recharge on site rather than burn fuel in stop-start conditions.

Choosing Australian-made buses also keeps the supply chain closer to home, tying the airport’s decarbonisation push to domestic manufacturing. The program is expected to grow as more of the 50-strong order is delivered and brought online.

For travellers, the change will be most visible on the inter-terminal shuttles, where electric drivetrains run more quietly and without tailpipe emissions. The airfield buses will operate in a more restricted environment, supporting operations around aircraft stands and service areas.
