Solid-State Batteries Enter Mass Production With Mercedes-Backed ProLogium

Taiwan-based ProLogium has started mass production of solid-state battery cells, a milestone for a technology that has long been hyped as the next big leap for electric vehicles. The company, which counts Mercedes-Benz among its backers, says its first commercially produced cells deliver notably high energy density.

That matters because solid-state designs replace the flammable liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion packs with a solid material. The payoff could be lighter, more compact batteries that store more energy in the same space, potentially extending driving range without adding bulk. Safety characteristics may also improve, though real-world performance still needs to be proven at scale.

ProLogium’s move from lab samples to factory output is significant on its own, since many solid-state efforts have stalled at the pilot stage. Mercedes’ involvement adds weight to the effort, signaling that at least one major automaker sees a viable path to putting the technology in vehicles.

Questions remain about cost, manufacturing yield and how quickly solid-state cells can ramp up to volumes that matter for the broader EV market. For now, ProLogium can claim a genuine first: solid-state batteries rolling off a mass-production line rather than sitting in a research demo.
