Slate Auto Opens Its First Test Drive Hub in Chicago — and It Feels More Real Now

Slate Auto, the Jeff Bezos-backed electric truck startup, has cut the ribbon on its very first physical “experience center,” planted in Chicago’s Near West Side. The opening gave fleet buyers from the Midwest and members of the press their first genuine, hands-on encounter with a vehicle the company is positioning as the most affordable new car on the American market. It also marks a symbolic milestone: an EV startup that until now existed mostly on paper now has a front door customers can walk through.

The space itself has history. Slate moved into a former Tesla storefront on West Grand Avenue, a building already configured with a small showroom, a service garage and retail area — and, conveniently, wiring for NACS charging. That existing setup, combined with a location that has a proven record of putting EV-curious drivers behind the wheel, made the choice an easy one for the young brand.

  • Built to feel pricier than it is: Door handles, the steering wheel, manual seat adjusters, the tailgate latch and the charge port cover all deliver firm, weighty feedback. The center console barely flexes. Slate’s message is clear: inexpensive does not mean cheap.
  • Ride quality impressed: During a passenger-only test ride over Chicago’s famously rough, construction-heavy roads, the truck ran quiet and smooth with no squeaks or rattles, and felt adequately quick from the passenger seat.
  • Clever engineering philosophy: Conversations with Slate’s technical team revealed a push to reuse the same fasteners wherever possible across the vehicle — a decision that could spark an unusually vibrant, 3D-printed tuner scene down the road.
  • A familiar address: The Near West Side building was previously a Tesla retail site, and Slate is leveraging its showroom layout and charging infrastructure rather than starting from scratch.

Why It Matters

For a startup, a showroom is more than real estate — it is a credibility test. Slate has spent its short life promising a low-cost electric pickup, and letting shoppers touch the materials, slam the tailgate and take a ride is the moment that promise starts converting into trust. Chicago is a deliberate pick, too: Illinois has a strong appetite for trucks and a growing openness to electrification, making the Midwest a natural beachhead for a budget-focused brand.

Still, one polished experience center does not guarantee success. Slate’s overall prospects remain far from certain, and the company has to prove it can scale production and delivery. But for anyone in Chicago curious about whether the affordable EV truck story holds up, the doors are now open — and the answer is something they can feel for themselves.
