Scania Unveils Long-Haul Electric Truck With Nearly 720 KM of Range

Scania has rolled out a new heavy-duty electric truck aimed squarely at the long-haul segment, and the headline figure is its single-charge range of roughly 720 kilometers, or about 474 miles. To get there, the Swedish manufacturer stretched the truck’s front end and packed in additional battery packs rather than settling for a standard cab layout.

The design choices underline a broader shift in how truck makers are approaching electrification. Extended fronts and larger battery banks are becoming a common workaround for the range and payload demands that come with regional and long-distance freight, where downtime at charging points directly affects operating costs.

While Scania pushes battery technology further into heavy transport, the debate over alternatives continues elsewhere in the industry. Stakeholders in hydrogen and fuel-cell solutions are responding by doubling down on their own preferred path, keeping the competition between battery-electric and hydrogen powertrains alive at the commercial vehicle level.

For fleet operators, the practical question is less about which technology wins and more about which one fits a given route, depot setup, and refueling or charging access. Scania’s latest offering adds another option to that mix rather than settling the argument.
