Polestar 2 Ends Its Run After Six Years, Next-Gen Successor Set for 2027

Polestar 2 Ends Its Run After Six Years, Next-Gen Successor Set for 2027

The Polestar 2 is no more. Production of the Swedish brand’s first electric car has wrapped up at the Luqiao plant in China, closing a six-year chapter that saw roughly 200,000 units roll off the line worldwide.

A company spokesperson confirmed the shutdown to InsideEVs, following earlier reporting from Norway’s TV2. For Polestar, this is the end of the model that essentially created the brand — and the starting point for whatever comes next.

Six Years, Several Facelifts, One Big Drivetrain Swap

Launched as Polestar’s first mass-produced vehicle, the 2 was never a runaway sales hit against the Tesla Model 3. It was smaller, often pricier, and built in China — a combination that made the value argument harder to win, even with aggressive lease deals softening the blow.

Still, the car evolved. Early base versions sent power to the front wheels, with dual-motor all-wheel drive as an upgrade. Then came the 2023 refresh that flipped the script: entry-level trims went rear-wheel drive, while the punchier variants kept AWD. Power and range climbed along the way too.

Peak Specs: Up to 314 miles of EPA-estimated range · Rear- or all-wheel drive · Built on the CMA platform

That CMA-based architecture kept the 2 competitive as the compact EV segment filled up, but it couldn’t outrun the Model 3 on price. By the time the last European-spec facelift landed last year, the writing was already on the wall.

The U.S. Exit Came First

American buyers lost access to the Polestar 2 last year. The official reason was steep import tariffs on Chinese-built EVs, but the story went further: a U.S. Department of Commerce decision denied the automaker authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule, effectively forcing Polestar to stop selling cars stateside.

Europe and other markets remain open for business, though. And the nameplate isn’t finished — a second-generation Polestar 2 is scheduled to arrive next year.

What the Successor Looks Like

Polestar hasn’t locked in the design, but the company has hinted the new 2 will draw from the Formula 2030 concept and stick with the formula that worked: a small sedan-crosser hybrid of shapes. Expect it to slot into a broader product push.

  • Polestar 5: Grand tourer, already on sale in Europe
  • Polestar 4: SUV, also launched in Europe this year
  • New Polestar 2: The next model in the pipeline
  • Polestar 7: A small crossover to follow

That’s four new vehicles in three years under the Geely-owned brand’s plan. Two are done. The third — the car that started it all — is up next.
