Smart #2 Launch Edition Sells Out Before Most Buyers Even See It

Smart’s reboot of its two-door city car is off to a stronger start than the company expected. The limited Couture Edition that opened European order books for the Smart #2 is now fully allocated in every market where it was offered.
Just 999 units were built, and two weeks were enough to clear them all — even though most buyers placed orders without ever sitting in the car.
“What makes this success even more remarkable is that most of our customers haven’t even had the chance to see the car in person yet,” said Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of Smart Europe GmbH.
A Launch Trim, Not The Whole Story
The sellout applies only to the Couture Edition. Regular #2 trims remain available to order across Europe and should stay that way for a while. Smart is treating the rapid clearance as a signal rather than a supply crisis.
The special model sits on the top Premium trim and adds a glass roof, ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, a Sennheiser sound system and a wireless phone charging pad. Outside, it wears an exclusive Atelier White Matt finish with a Platinum Gold roof, 16-inch Lyra wheels with gold accents and strap-style details in the front bumper — a look pulled from the Concept #2 shown about six months ago.
What’s Underneath
The #2 is the spiritual successor to the ForTwo EQ, and the spec sheet is a clear step up from that car.
Key Specs: 35.8 kWh LFP battery · 180 mi (290 km) WLTP range · 10–80% DC charge in roughly 20 minutes · From €19,990 in Germany, France and Italy
Battery capacity has nearly doubled compared with the original’s 17.6 kWh pack, and range has followed suit. Charging speeds are in a different league too, with the small EV needing about 20 minutes for a 10-to-80% top-up.
Why The Two-Door Still Works In Europe
Smart’s US chapter with the two-door electric model was brief. In Europe, though, the tiny runabout became a familiar sight in dense city traffic — a car with a cult following rather than mass-market reach.
That context explains the launch demand. Few vehicles in this segment have that kind of emotional pull, and Smart is leaning on nostalgia while pitching modern battery tech and much better charging.
The pricing helps as well. At €19,990, the #2 undercuts most of the growing field of small Chinese-built EVs arriving in Europe, and it carries a badge that city drivers already recognize.
Delivery Timing
First customer cars in left-hand-drive markets are due around the middle of the second quarter. Right-hand-drive markets will have to wait until 2027.
For a car that seats two and tops out at 180 miles of WLTP range, the early numbers are a decent endorsement. Whether the regular trims can keep momentum once the novelty fades is the question Smart now has to answer.
