Tesla Owners Tried Emergency Drive Away Anyway—And the Bills Are Rolling In

Tesla gave owners a blunt warning when it shipped Emergency Drive Away: press the button only if you truly have no other choice. Naturally, a handful of people pressed it just to see what happens. Now the receipts are public, and they range from a friendly zero to a four-figure scare.
The feature lets a driver yank free of a Supercharger stall mid-session—the car unlocks the connector, the driver pulls forward, and the charging handle breaks away. Tesla built it for genuine getaways, not for satisfying a curious itch. Every activation flags the vehicle for a Service Center inspection before the warning can be cleared, because both the charge port and the stall may have taken damage.
What Curiosity Costs
One owner reportedly ended up with a $539 bill just for having the charge port examined. They never moved an inch.
Others walked away lighter. A Reddit user who tested the feature in park, then manually unplugged the cable to spare the equipment, still triggered an error only Tesla could reset—and the stall went out of service. Their inspection was written off as goodwill. Another owner saw a $255 estimate that shrank to **$33.15** at pickup, while a third was invoiced $178.20.
So the damage isn’t only mechanical. It’s administrative.
The expensive side of the story: Tesla says repairing a Supercharger stall wrecked by Emergency Drive Away “can be up to $25k.”
When It’s Not Just a Button Press
Not every trial ended bloodlessly. One Reddit observer watched a car actually activate the feature at a public charger and pull away. The stall visibly flexed from the cable yank, and a component dropped to the ground behind the departing car. That driver likely won’t get the goodwill treatment.
The pricing spread tells you something about how Tesla is handling this: case by case, with plenty of discretion. There’s no flat penalty schedule, which means the bill depends on what the technician finds—and, apparently, on how sympathetic the service center feels.
Should Tesla Make It Harder?
There’s an obvious fix on the table: add friction, more confirmation screens, something to slow a curious thumb. But Tesla has a competing interest. Emergency Drive Away exists precisely because seconds matter in a real emergency, and a clunky activation flow defeats the purpose.
A mandatory service visit plus a possible bill is supposed to be deterrent enough. Judging by the Reddit threads, it isn’t.
For now, the feature works as designed—for the driver who needs it. For everyone else, it’s the most expensive way to satisfy a two-second curiosity.
