One Household, One Cargo E-Bike, Zero Second Car: A 620-Mile Experiment

Plenty of families talk about ditching a car, but a bike-friendly couple with two young kids actually tried it. They borrowed an Xtracycle Hopper electric cargo bike for an extended stretch and simply rode it wherever daily life took them. The odometer now reads roughly 620 miles, all accumulated without adding another vehicle to the driveway.

The person behind the experiment is no newcomer to the category. After close to twenty years in the e-bike business and roughly a decade of published reviews, he has cycled through an enormous number of models, usually for only a few weeks at a time. A standard one-month review of the Hopper had already wrapped up when a longer-term project came along, so he handed the bike to his closest friend and asked the family to use it hard.

That setup produced something a short-term test rarely can: a real picture of how a cargo e-bike copes with school runs, errands and everyday hauling over months rather than days. With the mileage milestone reached, the family is now sharing what worked, what surprised them and what it was really like to lean on two wheels instead of a second car.
