Mitsubishi Revives Outlander PHEV for the Philippines, Doubling Down on Plug-In Hybrids

Mitsubishi is giving the plug-in hybrid Outlander another shot in the Philippines, roughly six years after its first attempt flopped. When the third-generation Outlander PHEV arrived in September 2020, the timing could hardly have been worse: the country was deep in pandemic lockdowns, charging infrastructure outside a few mall basements was essentially absent, and buyers stayed away in droves.

Rather than abandon the segment, the automaker is returning with the latest Outlander PHEV, betting that the market has shifted enough to make the formula work this time. That wager rests on a straightforward premise: drivers get electric-only commuting without depending entirely on a public charging network that is still thin on the ground.

For Mitsubishi, the Outlander PHEV has long served as its flagship electrified offering, and its Philippine comeback signals that the company sees plug-in hybrids as a durable bridge rather than a stopgap. The question now is whether local demand — and infrastructure — has caught up with the product.

The company has not abandoned its belief that combining a combustion engine with a battery pack is the right answer for markets where pure EVs remain a hard sell.
