Minnesota Regulators Block New Gas Plant, Push Utility to Explore Cleaner Options

Minnesota Power’s plan to add a new natural gas facility has hit a regulatory wall. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission declined the utility’s request to move forward with the costly plant, instead directing it to keep studying ways to meet future demand without compromising grid reliability.

The decision, announced in St. Paul, was welcomed by a coalition of clean energy organizations that had argued the gas plant was unnecessary and expensive. They pushed for deeper analysis of alternatives before committing ratepayers to a long-term fossil fuel investment.

The commission’s order effectively pauses the gas project and requires Minnesota Power to return with a more thorough review of other pathways. That keeps the door open for renewable and other non-gas resources to play a larger role in the utility’s long-range planning. The outcome is being framed as a win for customers who would otherwise shoulder the cost of new gas infrastructure.
