EV Crash Safety: What to Do in the First Minutes After a Collision

Electric vehicle crashes demand a different set of priorities than conventional car accidents. The most important rule: create distance between you and the vehicle rather than inspecting it up close.

After a collision, power down the car if it is safe to do so. High-voltage systems can remain live even when the motor is silent, so avoid touching exposed cables or damaged components. Move away from the vehicle and keep others back until emergency responders arrive.

Watch for signs of battery trouble such as smoke, hissing, or unusual heat. These may indicate thermal runaway, which can escalate quickly. If you notice any of these, move farther away and alert professionals immediately.

Once everyone is at a safe distance, call emergency services and describe the situation as an EV incident. Providing clear information helps responders bring the right equipment and handle the scene appropriately.
