Caterpillar Brings Train-Style Diesel-Electric Power to Its Biggest Dozer Yet

Caterpillar is drawing on a technology that has kept trains moving for roughly a hundred years for its latest heavy machine. The company’s new diesel-electric drive dozer borrows the same basic idea found in locomotives: a diesel engine turns a generator, and that generator feeds electric motors that deliver the torque needed to push heavy loads.

In locomotives, this layout has long been valued for keeping the engine running at a steady, efficient speed while electric motors handle the hard work of moving enormous weight. Caterpillar is now applying that approach to a larger, heavier dozer than before, with the company pointing to substantial efficiency gains as the payoff.

The machine represents a step beyond the smaller diesel-electric dozer Caterpillar has already shown. By scaling the concept up, the manufacturer is testing whether train-proven electric drive can hold its advantages in a bigger, more demanding earthmoving package.
