California EV Sales Slip, Yet Several Electric Models Still Rule Their Segments

California remains the largest electric vehicle market in the United States, but this year has brought a noticeable cool-down in sales, both statewide and nationally. The days when EVs routinely crowded the top five of many vehicle categories, and occasionally claimed the number one spot, look different now.
Even so, the segment-level picture is not one of collapse. Several electric models continue to lead their respective categories in California, holding off gasoline and hybrid rivals in the classes where they compete. That staying power suggests the slowdown is uneven rather than universal, with some buyers still choosing battery-electric options when the right body style and price point line up.
For shoppers and industry watchers, the takeaway is that EV momentum in the Golden State has cooled but not disappeared. Category leadership by electric nameplates shows demand persists in specific niches, even as the broader market adjusts to shifting incentives, pricing, and model availability.
