BYD's New Flagship EV: The Great Han Sedan Arrives with Over 1,000 km Range

BYD has officially launched the Da Han EV, a full-size electric sedan that now sits at the top of its Dynasty series lineup. The new model, which translates to ‘Great Han’, arrives just months after the company introduced the Great Tang SUV, forming a premium duo aimed at solidifying BYD’s presence in the upper end of China’s EV market. With a starting price of 235,900 yuan (roughly €31,300), the Great Han is positioned as a direct competitor to other high-end electric saloons, offering a combination of long-range capability and advanced technology.

At the heart of the Great Han is BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery with LFP chemistry, boasting a capacity of 102.3 kWh. The sedan is built on a 1,000-volt architecture, which enables rapid charging from 10 to 97 percent in a claimed nine minutes—a figure that, if accurate, would set a new benchmark for production EVs. The range varies by variant: the entry-level and mid-tier rear-wheel-drive models achieve an impressive 1,008 km on the CLTC cycle, while the all-wheel-drive flagship offers 880 km. Three trims are available, with prices topping out at 275,900 yuan (about €36,600). The single-motor versions produce 370 kW, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, whereas the dual-motor AWD variant delivers 570 kW and completes the sprint in just 3.3 seconds.

Measuring 5.26 metres in length, 2 metres in width, and with a wheelbase of 3.13 metres, the Great Han is a substantial five-seat saloon. Its sleek profile is highlighted by a drag coefficient of just 0.197, contributing to its efficiency. The design follows BYD’s ‘Loong Face’ language, featuring slim headlights, a chrome grille, and vertical air intakes. A colour-accented roof houses a central LiDAR sensor, feeding into the ‘God’s Eye B’ driver assistance system. The car also offers rear-wheel steering with a maximum angle of 7 degrees, which reduces the turning circle to 5.2 metres and enables a ‘Crab Walk’ function for diagonal movement. Other highlights include dual-chamber air suspension, predictive chassis control, Nappa leather upholstery, and a 31-speaker audio system.

Pre-sales for the Da Han EV began on 21 August at the Chengdu Auto Show, with early buyers receiving incentives such as one year of free fast charging and trade-in bonuses. Initially, only battery-electric variants will be offered, though BYD has already filed for regulatory approval of a plug-in hybrid version, suggesting a PHEV could join the lineup later. The launch of the Great Han and Great Tang fills a gap in BYD’s portfolio around the 300,000-yuan mark, creating a clearer tiered structure alongside its luxury sub-brands, Denza and Yangwang. The Han nameplate has been pivotal for BYD since its original launch, helping the brand establish a foothold in the premium electric segment, and the new Great Han continues that legacy with updated technology and positioning.
