BYD's Fang Cheng Bao Branches Out With Formula S Electric Sedan Launch

BYD’s premium sub-brand Fang Cheng Bao is expanding beyond its SUV and off-road lineup with the launch of its first sedan, the Formula S. The new series carries a starting price of 189,900 yuan, which translates to roughly $28,080, positioning the electric sedan in China’s increasingly crowded mid-to-upper segment.
The move marks a strategic shift for Fang Cheng Bao, a nameplate that has so far built its identity on rugged models and off-road capability. By entering the electric sedan market, the brand is testing whether its appeal can travel beyond utility-focused vehicles and into a category dominated by sleek, tech-heavy competitors.
A sedan debut at this price point puts Fang Cheng Bao directly against a wave of established and emerging electric sedans in China, where automakers are fighting for share with aggressive pricing and fast product rollouts. How buyers respond to a utility-brand sedan will be a key test of the sub-brand’s flexibility.
With the Formula S, BYD continues to spread its electric vehicle bets across multiple brands and body styles, aiming to cover nearly every mainstream and premium niche in its home market.
