BYD Logs Its Best Sales Month of 2026 as EV Deliveries Climb

BYD closed out September with 463,561 new energy vehicles handed over to customers, its highest monthly tally of 2026 so far. The result marks a gain of just under 17 percent versus the same month a year earlier and a 5.3 percent step up from the 440,293 units moved in August.

Fully electric models did the heavy lifting. At 273,143 battery-electric cars, September’s BEV volume rose 6.6 percent over August — the month BYD first pushed past a quarter of a million EVs — and jumped 33.2 percent year-on-year. Plug-in hybrids moved the other way, with 183,570 units delivered, a 2.4 percent dip from September 2025. PHEVs made up 39.6 percent of global volume, even though they account for roughly 61.5 percent of the brand’s new registrations in Germany since January.

The domestic-overseas split shifted modestly back toward China. About 61 percent of September sales stayed at home, leaving 39 percent for export and foreign markets, down from a 43 percent overseas share in August. That is still a dramatic change from a year ago, when only 18 percent of BYD’s BEVs and PHEVs found buyers abroad. Exports reached 180,700 vehicles, up 153.6 percent, while domestic deliveries grew 12.8 percent to 282,861 units.

Year-to-date, BYD has delivered 3,131,576 vehicles through September, a 3.9 percent decline. Overseas volume, however, has nearly doubled to 1,342,960 units. Battery-electric cars account for a slim majority of the nine-month total at 1,629,957, with PHEVs at 1,448,587. Local assembly in Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand and Uzbekistan — plus a plant ramping up in Hungary — increasingly blurs the line between exports and overseas production.
