Bosch's Rigid E-Axle Tightens the Drivetrain on Heavy Electric Trucks

Bosch has introduced a rigid e-axle aimed at battery-electric commercial vehicles in the 18- to 49-metric-ton class. That bracket stretches from rigid distribution trucks all the way to tractor-trailer combinations, covering the heavy end of road freight.

On a rigid e-axle, the drive unit is mounted directly at the axle rather than back in the chassis. Torque therefore travels a shorter path to the wheels, since no propshaft is needed to bridge the gap between a remote motor and the axle. Bosch’s design bundles the electric motor and transmission into that single axle assembly.

Packing both components into the axle housing is part of a broader push by suppliers to adapt electric drivetrains to the packaging and duty cycles of heavy trucks. Details on output, availability and which manufacturers might adopt the system have not been disclosed.
