Wayve and Uber Begin Self-Driving Rides in London with Safety Driver on Board

Wayve and Uber have officially kicked off their autonomous ride service in London, marking a significant step for the UK capital’s self-driving scene. The two companies had planned this rollout for some time, and now riders can hail these vehicles through the Uber app.

However, the vehicles are not fully driverless yet. A safety driver remains behind the wheel for now, a precaution that allows the companies to monitor performance in real-world traffic. This approach is common in the early stages of autonomous operations.

The service uses electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI-driven driving system. This launch signals growing momentum for autonomous mobility in Europe, though full driverless operation may still take time.
