Waymo Wants Five Times the Fleet: 20,000 Robotaxis by the Close of 2027

Waymo is preparing a serious step up in scale. According to reporting by Semafor, the Alphabet-owned robotaxi outfit intends to grow its driverless fleet from about 4,000 vehicles today to 20,000 by the end of 2027 — a five-fold jump squeezed into roughly 14 months.

The roadmap is staged rather than sudden. The company reportedly aims to hit 8,000 cars by the close of 2026, then push on to the 20,000 mark the following year. If it lands anywhere near those numbers, Waymo’s lead over every other operator in the United States gets even harder to close.

Money for the build-out is already in place. In September, Waymo sealed $5 billion in debt financing, earmarked for speeding up expansion of its fully driverless ride-hailing business at home and abroad.

More Than Just Buying Vans

Scaling a robotaxi network is not simply a matter of ordering more vehicles and bolting on sensors. Every additional car pulls in support staff — remote operators who step in when an autonomous vehicle causes a jam, plus depot crews who clean, charge and dispatch the fleet. None of that work is automated.

Hardware partners are lined up to supply the metal. Hyundai has said it will build “tens of thousands” of Ioniq 5 robotaxis for Waymo, while Geely’s Zeekr brand is already putting its boxy Ojai people movers into service across three cities.

Waymo’s footprint has been widening steadily. As of September it was running in 15 major cities spread over eight states, handling more than half a million paid trips a week. Testing is underway in London and Tokyo, with further launches announced for Canada, Singapore and Spain.

Tesla, the loudest rival in the space, only began offering autonomous rides last year and remains far behind that kind of volume. A five-fold expansion would widen a gap that already looks substantial.
