Vulcan Energy Unveils Pre-Feasibility Study for Second Lithium Site in the Rhine Valley

Vulcan Energy has taken a significant step forward with its second lithium extraction venture located in the Upper Rhine Valley. The company recently released a pre-feasibility study outlining plans for a facility near Ludwigshafen, which is projected to yield approximately 21,100 tonnes of lithium carbonate each year. This output would substantially bolster the region’s role in the European battery supply chain.

However, the path to full-scale production is far from complete. Vulcan must navigate several development hurdles, including securing permits and refining the extraction technology, before a final investment decision can be made. The study serves as a critical milestone, but the company remains cautious about the timeline and emphasizes that much work lies ahead.

The project aligns with broader European efforts to secure domestic sources of critical raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. With lithium demand projected to soar, initiatives like this could reduce reliance on imports. Yet, progress hinges on efficient execution and continued support from regional stakeholders.
