Volvo Trucks Pushes Electric Haulage Into New Weight Class

Volvo Trucks has rolled out an electric truck designed for gross combination weights up to 80 tonnes, a segment that diesel-powered rigs have long dominated on their own. The new model is quoted with a range of 420 to 450 kilometres, according to Automotive World.

Heavy haulage has been one of the toughest assignments for battery-electric drivetrains, since pulling massive loads demands both sustained power and generous energy storage. Volvo’s move signals the company believes electric traction can now handle duties that were once considered off-limits for anything without a combustion engine.

If operators adopt the truck, it could reshape how freight companies plan routes and refuelling stops, and it adds pressure on rivals to develop comparable heavy-duty electric offerings. The launch also reinforces Volvo Trucks’ broader push to electrify its commercial lineup beyond lighter distribution work.
