GM Clarifies CarPlay Confusion: It Never Left Non-EV Models

General Motors recently unveiled a fresh infotainment software for its next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, highlighting an updated interface for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This move sparked confusion because GM had previously announced that it was phasing out these phone-mirroring systems from its electric vehicles in 2023.

The key distinction is that GM’s decision to drop CarPlay and Android Auto applied only to its EV lineup, not to its internal combustion engine vehicles. The new software for the Silverado and Sierra, which are gas-powered trucks, includes refreshed versions of CarPlay and Android Auto. Therefore, the systems never actually disappeared from GM’s non-EV models.

This situation underscores the ongoing tension between automakers and tech companies over control of the in-car experience. While GM aims to develop its own software platform for EVs, it continues to support popular smartphone integration in its traditional vehicles.
