Volkswagen Recalls 22,524 ID.4 EVs in the US Over Fire Risk, Caps Charging at 80%

Volkswagen has issued a fresh safety recall in the United States covering 22,524 examples of its ID.4 electric crossover, with the automaker pointing to a potential fire risk as the underlying concern. While engineers work toward a definitive remedy, owners of the affected vehicles are being instructed to limit charging to no more than 80 per cent of battery capacity as an interim precaution.

The recall adds to a growing list of service actions tied to the ID.4, Volkswagen’s volume electric model in North America, and it lands at a moment when the brand is already under scrutiny over how its battery-electric lineup performs in the field. An 80 per cent charging cap is a common short-term measure in such campaigns: it reduces the amount of energy stored in the pack, which in turn limits the severity of any thermal event while the root cause is still being identified.

For drivers, the practical effect is a temporary reduction in usable range and a different charging routine, since the advice applies until a final fix is rolled out. Volkswagen has not yet detailed what that fix will involve or when it will be available, and the company has not publicly specified the exact component or condition behind the fire risk.

The scale of the recall — just over 22,500 vehicles — is significant but contained relative to the ID.4’s total US population, suggesting the issue is tied to a specific build or supplier batch rather than the entire fleet. Even so, recalls of this nature carry weight for EV adoption, because charging restrictions and fire-risk headlines can weigh on consumer confidence at a time when automakers are trying to convince mainstream buyers that electric vehicles are as dependable as the combustion models they replace.

Owners are advised to watch for official communication from Volkswagen, which is expected to outline the remedy and the schedule for repairs. Until then, following the 80 per cent charging guidance is the recommended course of action for anyone whose ID.4 falls within the recalled build range.
