Volkswagen ID. Buzz Rejoins U.S. Lineup With an Overnight-Ready Tourer Variant

After sitting out a full model year on American soil, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is heading back into U.S. showrooms this fall, and it arrives with more than just a fresh paint catalog. The electric van’s year away left an obvious hole in Volkswagen’s stateside EV offering, so its comeback for 2027 is being framed as a reset rather than a simple re-launch.
The headline addition is the ID. Buzz Tourer, a variant aimed at people who want to sleep in their van rather than just commute in it. Built on the Pro S 4Motion foundation and adapted from the European Good Night Package, the Tourer bundles a fold-out mattress with platform, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, and an exterior table-and-chairs set. A dedicated Overnight Mode takes over lighting, climate, and energy management so campers do not have to micromanage systems after dark. Captain’s Chairs, a retractable tow hitch, Area View, an electrochromic smart roof, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black discs round out the adventure-oriented kit.
It is worth being clear about what the Tourer is not. Volkswagen is not reviving the full campervan formula of built-in kitchenettes and pop-top roofs. In a battery-electric van, every overnight load pulls from the same pack that moves the vehicle, which complicates thermal and power management in ways that classic propane-and-auxiliary-battery campers never had to worry about. The Tourer instead takes a lighter path, preserving the Buzz’s day-to-day usability while still tipping its hat to Volkswagen’s long camper tradition.
The 2027 lineup now spans Pro S RWD, Pro S 4Motion, Tourer 4Motion, and Pro S Plus 4Motion, all running Volkswagen’s ID.S 6 software with a refreshed navigation home screen and a redesigned vehicle settings page. A North American Charging System adapter opens up Tesla Supercharger access, and one-pedal driving joins the feature list. Connectivity gets a boost through a one-year In-Vehicle Premium trial with apps such as YouTube and Spotify, while Travel Assist now handles assisted lane changes with a wait-for-clear function, and Emergency Assist can steer the van to the right shoulder and stop it if it detects no driver input. Paint choices have been trimmed to two-tone schemes only, including a Candy White over Cherry Red combination that echoes the classic Type 2 Microbus, and the top trim offers an optional 21-inch wheel package.
The Buzz has never been a volume play, and the 2027 refresh does not change that. What it does is sharpen the van’s identity in a segment where practicality and price usually decide the winner, giving buyers a distinctive option that leans on personality and heritage instead.
