Volkswagen Deepens China EREV Bet as ID. ERA 8X Lands; ID. ERA 5X Set for November

SAIC Volkswagen has added a second range-extender model to its China-only ID. ERA family, launching the five-seat ID. ERA 8X with an aggressive limited-time price ladder that undercuts where the market had expected the SUV to sit. The vehicle opened on Monday with four variants spanning 206,800 yuan to 269,800 yuan during the promotional window, while official guide prices are listed at 226,800 yuan to 289,800 yuan. Before pricing was revealed at pre-sales on September 28, observers had generally penciled the 8X into the 250,000-350,000 yuan bracket, so the final figures landed noticeably lower than the consensus guess.

Positioned as a large five-seat extended-range SUV, the ID. ERA 8X measures 5,020 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,750 mm tall, riding on a 2,970 mm wheelbase. That makes it 187 mm shorter than the six-seat ID. ERA 9X, with 100 mm less between the axles, and roughly 93,000 yuan cheaper at the entry point. The range-extender setup is built around an EA211 1.5-liter turbocharged engine acting as a generator with up to 105 kW of output, paired with an 800-volt architecture and a choice of two- or all-wheel drive.

Drivetrain specs differ across the range. The Pro trim uses a single 220 kW (295 hp) motor and a 51.1-kWh battery for a CLTC electric range of 373 km and a combined figure of 1,567 km. The Max adds a second motor for 370 kW combined, keeping the same 51.1-kWh pack and posting 340 km of CLTC electric range. The two long-range variants step up to 65.2-kWh batteries sourced from CATL, reaching 451 km on electricity alone and 1,602 km combined. All-wheel-drive versions quote 660 Nm of peak torque and a 0-100 km/h sprint of 4.6 seconds.

On the technology side, every variant carries Momenta’s R7 world-model-based driver-assistance system, which combines a 192-channel LiDAR with 26 sensors and enables highway and urban navigation on autopilot plus parking-space-to-parking-space assistance. Inside, the cockpit runs Volkswagen OS on a Snapdragon 8295P chip, supported by twin 15.6-inch 2.5K dashboard displays, a W-HUD and Smart Surface panels embedded in the door trim. The 8X steps into one of China’s most contested price bands, where it squares off against Li Auto’s Li L6, the Huawei-backed Aito M6, Xpeng’s G9L and IM Motors’ LS8.

At the close of the launch event, SAIC Volkswagen confirmed that the ID. ERA 5X will reach the market in November. That model is the lineup’s first pure battery-electric entry, a compact SUV measuring 4,560 mm in length, and it carries extra significance as Volkswagen’s first vehicle globally to be built on the China Main Platform, using the China Electronic Architecture co-developed with Xpeng. Regulatory filing for the 5X was completed in August. With the 8X now on sale, the ID. ERA range counts three models: the 9X, which arrived on April 25 and passed 10,000 deliveries within two months, the 5S plug-in hybrid sedan that went on sale August 21 from a limited-time 89,900 yuan, and the new 8X.
