Smart #2 Brings Back the Electric Two-Seater at Paris Motor Show

Smart has taken the wraps off its new #2, an electric two-seater making its world debut at the Paris Motor Show. The compact model marks a return to the brand’s small-car roots, reviving the two-seat format that defined its early identity. According to the company, the #2 will offer a range of roughly 300 kilometres on the WLTP cycle, powered by a 35.7-kWh battery. Sales are scheduled to begin in 2027.

The #2 slots into an increasingly crowded field of small electric cars, where efficiency and urban manoeuvrability matter more than outright power. Its two-seat layout and modest battery size suggest Smart is targeting city dwellers who value compact dimensions and easy parking over long-distance capability. The roughly 300-kilometre figure, while not class-leading, should cover typical daily driving and weekend errands for most urban users.

Smart’s decision to resurrect the two-seater comes as several brands reconsider small, affordable EVs. The segment has seen renewed interest as battery costs stabilise and regulators push for lower-emission urban transport. By returning to a formula it helped popularise, Smart is betting that buyers still want a distinctively small electric car rather than a shrunken crossover.

The #2’s arrival in 2027 leaves time for Smart to finalise specifications and pricing, neither of which was fully detailed at the Paris unveiling. The show appearance gives the public a first look at the production-oriented design, with the brand emphasising its compact footprint and electric drivetrain. Whether the two-seater can carve out a niche in a market increasingly dominated by small SUVs will depend on how Smart positions it on price and practicality.

For now, the #2 stands as a statement of intent: Smart is not abandoning the small-car DNA that made it recognisable. The Paris debut is the first concrete step in that renewed strategy, with more details expected closer to the 2027 launch.
