Utah-Mined Terbium Oxide Wins Approval from Major Japanese Magnet Maker

Energy Fuels has cleared a significant hurdle in the rare earth supply chain: its terbium oxide, refined at the company’s White Mesa facility in Utah, has been formally accepted by a Japanese producer of rare earth permanent magnets. According to Energy Fuels, the manufacturer is among the largest of its kind operating outside of China.

The Japanese company confirmed that the material satisfies its technical requirements and is now cleared for use. Terbium is a critical ingredient in high-performance permanent magnets, which are essential components in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines and various consumer electronics.

This qualification marks a step forward for efforts to build rare earth processing capacity in the United States. By demonstrating that domestically refined terbium can meet the standards of a major overseas magnet producer, Energy Fuels is positioning its Utah operation as a viable alternative source for these strategically important materials.
