University at Buffalo Rolls Out Eight Battery-Electric Buses Across Campus Routes

The University at Buffalo has taken a sizable step toward cleaner campus mobility by putting eight new 40-foot battery-powered transit vehicles into service. These buses now operate as part of the UB Stampede shuttle network, which carries roughly 16,000 riders on a typical day. UB is a flagship institution within the New York State system, enrolling around 30,000 students.

The rollout was shaped by a three-way partnership. Campus transportation operator WeDriveU handled day-to-day service integration, while Zenobē, a firm focused on fleet electrification, contributed expertise on the transition. Charging hardware is already in place, with ten chargers installed to keep the buses running.

The move positions the university among a growing group of large institutions rethinking how they move people around campus. Electrifying high-mileage shuttle routes can cut tailpipe emissions substantially, since these vehicles run continuously throughout the day rather than sitting idle.
