Toyota to Deploy 400,000 Factory Robots Starting 2028

Toyota is gearing up for a large-scale robotics push in its manufacturing operations, with plans to bring 400,000 factory robots online from 2028 onwards. The automaker’s approach centers on a method where robots pick up tasks by observing human workers in action, allowing the company to build training data organically instead of relying on simulated environments.

That distinction matters. Simulation-based training has long been a bottleneck for industrial robotics, since virtual setups often fail to capture the full complexity of a real production line. By letting machines learn directly from the people already doing the work, Toyota aims to sidestep some of those limitations and accelerate how quickly robots can be adapted to new tasks.

The scale of the plan signals how deeply Toyota expects automation to reshape vehicle manufacturing in the coming years. Rather than treating robots as fixed, single-purpose equipment, the company appears to be betting on systems that can be trained and retrained as production needs shift.

Toyota has not detailed which facilities will receive the robots first or how the rollout will be phased. Even so, the 2028 timeline and the six-figure deployment target make this one of the more ambitious automation commitments announced by a major automaker in recent memory.
