Toyota Reportedly Prepares Extended-Range EV Production in China by 2027

Toyota is reportedly laying the groundwork to manufacture extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in China, with production slated to commence in April 2027. The move, first reported by Nikkei Asia, signals the automaker’s intent to diversify its electrified lineup in the world’s largest auto market.

According to the report, Toyota aims to scale up EREV output to roughly 400,000 units annually by 2028. This would mark a significant expansion of its Chinese manufacturing footprint and a strategic shift toward vehicles that combine a battery-electric drivetrain with a gasoline engine acting as a generator.

The plan underscores Toyota’s broader effort to adapt to regional market demands, where EREVs have gained traction as a practical bridge between conventional hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles.
