Toshiba Teams Up to Trial Pantograph Fast-Charging for Electric Buses

Toshiba is working with several partners on a pilot program that puts electric buses through their paces using an overhead pantograph charging setup. Instead of plugging in, the buses connect to a charging gantry mounted above the vehicle, allowing power to flow quickly during brief stops along a route.

The appeal of pantograph charging lies in its fit with the stop-and-go rhythm of public transit. Because buses return to the same terminals and stations repeatedly, infrastructure can be concentrated at those points rather than spread across a wide network. That makes fast top-ups possible without pulling vehicles out of service for long charging sessions.

The trial is aimed at gauging how well the system holds up under real operating conditions. Data gathered from the tests is expected to inform decisions about scaling the technology for broader transit fleets.
