Tesla Rolls Out First Pre-Built 1.2 MW Megacharger for Electric Semi Trucks

Tesla has put its first factory-assembled Megacharger into service, a 1.2 MW charging unit built for its electric Semi trucks. Because the station arrives pre-fabricated, it can be dropped into place and energised far faster than a conventional site built piece by piece on location.

The timing is notable given the pressure diesel prices are putting on fleet operators. Higher fuel bills sharpen the case for electrifying heavy haulage, and a charger that ships as a single unit shortens one of the biggest bottlenecks in that transition: waiting for infrastructure to be constructed on site.

Megachargers are designed to deliver the kind of power long-haul trucks need to keep running rather than sitting idle, and modular, pre-assembled hardware could make it easier to expand charging capacity as more electric rigs hit the road. Tesla has not disclosed how many units it plans to deploy.
