South African Operator Expands Off-Grid Solar Charging Hubs

Just three months after rolling out its solar-powered, off-grid EV charging network along South Africa’s N3 highway corridor, Zero Carbon Charge (operating as CHARGE) has announced plans to double the number of chargers at its two flagship hubs. The decision comes as passenger and commercial EV adoption in the region outpaces early projections.

Each CHARGE hub relies entirely on on-site solar generation, with battery storage ensuring 24/7 availability. The expansion is designed to accommodate the growing flow of electric vehicles on the corridor, a key trade route connecting Johannesburg and Durban. By scaling up capacity, CHARGE aims to reduce wait times and support fleets making longer regional trips.

The move underscores a broader trend in emerging markets where grid instability makes self-sufficient charging infrastructure a practical alternative. As more South African fleets transition to electric, charging networks that operate independently of the national grid are becoming increasingly strategic.
