Solaris Enters US Market with Urbino 40 Electric Bus, Targeting American Transit Agencies

Polish bus manufacturer Solaris has officially entered the United States market, unveiling its Urbino 40 electric bus at the American Public Transportation Association’s TRANSform & Expo in Chicago on October 5, 2026. The battery-electric model was developed on a dedicated platform specifically for North American transit agencies, marking a significant step for the company as it seeks to establish itself in one of the world’s most demanding public transportation markets.

The Urbino 40 electric features roof-mounted batteries designed to meet the range requirements of transit agencies operating heavy daily routes. According to Solaris, this battery layout also enhances safety and simplifies maintenance procedures. The vehicle incorporates in-house battery integration and monitoring systems, alongside thermal management, energy-efficient climate control, and advanced driver assistance technologies. Drivers benefit from a fully enclosed cabin, exterior rear-view cameras, cornering lights, and an ergonomic cockpit, while passengers enjoy wide aisles and accessible multi-use areas.

Solaris, which has been part of Spain’s CAF Group since 2018, offers zero-emission buses in 40- and 60-foot lengths for the region. The company’s first US electric bus deliveries are scheduled for King County Metro in Seattle and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. These orders complement existing trolleybus supply agreements, including work with TransLink in Vancouver. The move gives CAF a bus portfolio to complement its long-standing rail supply relationships with the same American transit agencies, creating a potentially powerful cross-selling opportunity.

The manufacturer’s track record includes 30,000 vehicle deliveries across 900 cities in 34 countries, providing a strong foundation for its US expansion. While Solaris emphasizes local manufacturing as part of its North American pitch, the company has not detailed specific plans and confirms that all its buses are currently built in Poland. The company’s product lineup now centers on battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and trolleybus models, positioning it to address the diverse zero-emission requirements of transit agencies across the United States.
