Sensata Unveils New Sensor for Propane-Based EV Thermal Systems

Sensata Technologies has introduced a compact sensor that combines pressure and temperature measurement, specifically engineered for propane-based thermal management in electrified vehicles. The R290 P+T Sensor is designed to support systems using R290 refrigerant, which automakers are increasingly evaluating as a low-global-warming-potential alternative to current refrigerants. Unlike common HFCs, propane contains no fluorine atoms and therefore avoids PFAS concerns, making it an attractive option for future vehicle climate control.
Sensata emphasizes that its new sensor ensures reliable and accurate readings even with the unique properties of propane, including its flammability and higher operating pressures. The device is built to withstand the rigors of automotive environments and integrates easily into existing thermal loop architectures, helping engineers optimize system efficiency and safety.
By addressing the specific needs of R290 systems, Sensata aims to accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendlier refrigerants in the EV industry. The sensor is expected to be available to OEMs and tier-one suppliers as they develop next-generation thermal systems.
