Sensata Bundles High-Voltage Distribution Into One Unit for Commercial EVs

Commercial electric trucks and buses typically rely on a web of separate parts to manage high-voltage power. Sensata Technologies is now offering a single packaged alternative called the OmniNode, a high-voltage power distribution unit the company says is patent-pending and available as an off-the-shelf product. It is aimed squarely at battery-electric commercial vehicles rather than passenger cars.

Rather than forcing manufacturers to source and integrate multiple standalone components, the OmniNode gathers the core functions of a high-voltage architecture into one enclosure. Those functions cover DC fast charging, power switching, circuit protection, current and voltage measurement, onboard diagnostics and communications. Sensata builds the unit from its own portfolio, drawing on contactors, fuses and current sensors it already produces.

The target market spans commercial vehicles that operate both on paved roads and in rougher conditions, including vehicles in the Class 5 category. By consolidating these tasks into a single off-the-shelf system, Sensata is positioning the OmniNode as a way for commercial EV makers to simplify design and procurement instead of assembling a patchwork of individual high-voltage parts.
