Scania and Toyota Expand Hydrogen Truck Trials with 40 Fuel Cell Vehicles

Scania is moving ahead with hydrogen fuel cell testing by integrating Toyota’s existing fuel cell technology into 40 of its trucks. The two companies are deepening an existing partnership to put the hardware through its paces in everyday operations.

The fleet-scale trial is intended to map out where hydrogen fuel cell trucks make the most sense in real-world logistics, rather than treating the technology as a laboratory exercise. By using Toyota’s current-generation fuel cell system, Scania can focus on vehicle integration and operational data instead of developing the stack from scratch.

Hydrogen remains a niche option in the push to decarbonise heavy road transport, where battery-electric trucks are already entering service. The Scania-Toyota project will help show whether fuel cell trucks can carve out a viable role alongside them.
