Rohm Confirms Silicon Carbide Supply Deal for BMW's Neue Klasse EVs

Japanese semiconductor maker Rohm has been confirmed as a supplier of silicon carbide (SiC) power chips for BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform. The announcement underscores how fiercely component makers are competing to lock in design wins on premium EV architectures, where power electronics play a central role in efficiency and range.

Silicon carbide semiconductors are prized in EV powertrains because they handle high voltages with lower energy losses than conventional silicon, helping automakers squeeze more mileage out of each battery pack. Securing a place on BMW’s next-generation platform gives Rohm a high-profile reference customer as it squares off against rivals in the widening SiC market.

For BMW, the deal adds another building block to the Neue Klasse programme, which the automaker is positioning as a technological reset for its electric line-up.
