Rivian's New Patent Turns EVs Into Mobile Power Hubs for Homes and Tools

Rivian has filed a patent for a pass-through charging system that would allow its electric vehicles to function as portable power sources, effectively acting like giant extension cords on wheels. The technology described in the patent enables the vehicle’s battery to supply electricity directly to external devices or even a home’s electrical panel while the vehicle is parked. This could eliminate the need for separate generators during power outages or outdoor activities.

The system works by routing power from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery through an onboard inverter, converting DC to AC for household use. Unlike traditional vehicle-to-load (V2L) setups that require special adapters, Rivian’s approach integrates the necessary hardware directly into the vehicle’s charging architecture. The patent also suggests that multiple Rivian vehicles could be daisy-chained to increase total available power output.

While Rivian has not issued an official statement about the patent, the filing aligns with the company’s focus on adventure-ready features. If produced, this technology could make Rivian EVs a compelling choice for camping, job sites, or emergency backup.
