Renault Trucks Introduces E-Tech T 780 Electric Rig with 660 km Range at IAA

At the IAA Transportation show, Renault Trucks pulled the wraps off its new E-Tech T 780, an electric tractor unit that the company says can travel up to 660 kilometers on a single charge. The announcement comes as the heavy-duty sector tries to move beyond short-haul electric trials and into longer routes that fleet operators actually need.

Rather than focusing only on battery-electric models, Renault Trucks used its IAA stand to show a two-track strategy: squeezing more efficiency out of diesel powertrains while also making electric range figures more believable for buyers. The E-Tech T 780 sits at the center of that effort, aiming to answer the range question that has kept many hauliers on the sidelines.

The broader message from the show is that truck manufacturers are hedging their bets. Diesel is not disappearing overnight, and electric trucks still face questions about charging infrastructure, payload and cost. By presenting the E-Tech T 780 alongside improved diesel options, Renault Trucks is positioning itself for a transition period where both technologies coexist.

For fleet managers, the 660 km claim will be the number to watch. If it holds up in real-world operations, it could open up regional and long-haul routes that were previously considered out of reach for battery-electric trucks.
