Porsche and cylib Turn 100% Recycled Cathode Into Working Battery Cells

Porsche has partnered with recycling specialist cylib to produce battery cells using a cathode made entirely from recycled material. This marks a concrete step toward closing the loop on battery production in Europe, where automakers are increasingly looking to reduce their exposure to volatile global raw material supply chains.
The project demonstrates that recycled cathode material can meet the performance requirements for electric vehicle batteries. By proving the technical viability of a fully recycled cathode, the collaboration addresses one of the key challenges in making EV batteries more sustainable and less dependent on newly mined resources.
For Porsche, the move aligns with broader industry efforts to establish a circular economy for battery materials. As demand for electric vehicles grows, securing reliable and ethical sources of critical metals like lithium, nickel, and cobalt has become a strategic priority for European manufacturers.
While the announcement focuses on the technical achievement, it also signals a shift in how automakers approach supply chain resilience. Recycling could play a significant role in mitigating supply risks and reducing the environmental footprint of battery production.
