Panasonic Energy Opens Osaka Battery R&D Hub as EV and Data-Centre Demand Accelerates

Panasonic Energy has brought its battery development operations together at a new research facility in Osaka, a move designed to sharpen the company’s response to rising demand from both electric vehicles and data centres. The consolidation is intended to speed up how quickly the company can move battery technology from early-stage research into production-ready cells.

By centralising its engineering and development work in one location, Panasonic Energy aims to shorten development cycles at a time when automakers and infrastructure operators are pushing for faster improvements in range, durability and charging performance. The pressure is coming from two directions at once: EV manufacturers seeking competitive cells, and data-centre operators needing reliable energy storage at scale.

Osaka’s existing role as a base for Panasonic’s battery business made it a natural choice for the hub. The company has not disclosed specific investment figures or timelines for the facility, but framed the move as a structural change in how it organises battery research rather than a single product announcement.

The decision reflects a wider trend among battery suppliers, who are reorganising their R&D operations to compete on both speed and scale as global electrification targets tighten.
